October 2008 We recently held a program to celebrate Constitution Day, September 17th. A visiting teacher sharing with the students asked, “How do you know that I care about you?” A seventh grade girl responded, “Because you would not be allowed in this building if you didn’t.” Maslow’s “hierarchy of needs” places safety and security one step above the most basic needs of food, water and air. This young lady obviously feels safe and secure in her school, something she has not felt before. Prior to attending Heritage, she did not spend two consecutive years in the same school. When a child’s most basic needs are met, we can proceed to other levels of need, like education. Thank you for your role in making Heritage Academy a safe, nurturing, and challenging place for 100 students to go to school |
September 2008 There is a new opportunity that will provide scholarships for deserving and needy children in our city, while also giving YOU a tax credit towards your Georgia income tax liability. Under the new Georgia law HB1133, you can receive a tax credit of up to $1,000 per year for individuals and $2,500 for couples filing jointly for amounts contributed to a qualified student scholarship organization. The monies donated will be used for K-12 scholarships for children who are currently in public schools and wish to attend a private school, such as Heritage. |

August 2008 School began Monday, August 11th with students in Kindergarten through 7th grade! Heritage Academy could not keep delivering its mission to urban youth if it were not for such a caring community. Because of volunteers, two examples of new additions to our program are the game of Bridge and Latin. Some preliminary studies have shown that the game of Bridge helps to improve standardized test scores. Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, both avid Bridge players, are encouraging Bridge programs in schools. It is well known that Latin helps to improve vocabulary and boost SAT scores. Our sixth and seventh graders are learning both Bridge and Latin because volunteers want to make a difference. You do, too and that is why you give. Thank you! |
May 2008 Tuesday is Library Day here at Heritage. Each class visits the library in turn and has a chance to check out books, listen to a story or learn to do research. Our library is manned by a faithful group of four volunteers, two of whom are former librarians. Our library team recently made special arrangements for a harpist to visit the library. She told them about the harp and its history, let them pluck all the strings and then played songs for them in various styles. What our faithful volunteers were really doing was opening up new experiences for our students. That is what you as a donor, are doing as well, opening up worlds of educational and life experiences that many of our students would never have if it were not for your help. |
April 2008 It might surprise you to know that ten percent of our students are being reared by grandparents. Donnyell’s grandmother has been raising her since she was 5 months old. This grandmother will tell you that she is so blessed to have her granddaughter in a school that upholds the same values that she does. I know you agree with me that such people are close to the heart of God. Thank you for your support that provides their grandchildren with this safe and nurturing school.
